Where PTA money is raised in San Francisco’s public elementary schools

The map shows what each school's parent nonprofit took in during its most recent IRS filing year, mostly the year ending June 2025. In the dollar view every $ is $50,000, rounded to the nearest $50k; the dot view sizes each school by the same figure. Parent groups at 38 schools reported $11.5M in total, and the ten largest took in nearly half of it. The other 35 schools reported under $50k or had no registered parent group.

$$50k raised (filed a 990) $990-N only: under $50k, amount not reported ØNo parent nonprofit found

Raised is total revenue and Held is total assets, both from the IRS Exempt Organizations master file, which carries each group's latest filing. Alamo, Clarendon and Rosa Parks each have two parent nonprofits, and their figures are summed. Each school's dollar signs are packed around its address, so in dense neighborhoods a cluster can drift a block or two. Private-school clusters are far larger and can't fit beside their schools, so each one takes the nearest open space, connected to its address by a line; the lines never cross.

A 990-N is the postcard return for groups with gross receipts normally under $50,000. It reports no dollar amounts. "No parent nonprofit found" means no IRS-registered group could be matched to the school. A PTA may still exist without its own registration, or keep its money in SFUSD accounts.

Private schools (shown with "Include private schools") are the 19 larger nonprofit private elementary and K–8 schools in the city. Their Raised is donations plus net event income, minus government grants, from each school's own Form 990 for the year ending mid-2025. Town School uses its year ending June 2024 instead, since its 2025 figure of $11.4M likely includes a building campaign. Tuition is not counted. Convent & Stuart Hall and most parish schools are church-exempt and file no 990, so they are missing.
